Most of us faced a situation where you take out a neatly pressed formal shirt from the wardrobe and just when you are about to put it on, find that the collars are disgustingly Yellow. You may witness such stains even though the shirt has been recently washed or has just got back from the dry cleaners. So, before you start complaining to the person in charge of you doing the laundry, it is time to understand the art of removing dirt from your formal shirt collars.
What causes yellow stains on collars?
But before we move ahead it is essential to understand the reasons behind these stains. From our experience in the detergent powder industry, we can tell you that such ugly stains stay rampant during the summer months and may tame down a bit as the weather gets colder. They are caused by a combination of dead skin particles, sweat, chemicals in hair products or sunscreen. It should be specifically mentioned that the chemicals in your sunscreen and hair products can react with the water to turn your collars yellow.
Now, that you know what causes the stains, it is essential to understand the best procedures to remove them effectively. In this regard, there are many methodologies that one may follow depending upon the scenario. Here we would mention some of the best practices.
The Normal Method
Safed detergent is packed with a powerful cleaning formula that can provide efficient cleaning without hampering the fabric. But to get the best cleaning effect on your collars you should apply it directly to the affected area. Use a toothbrush to spread out the liquid cleaner effectively all over the stained portions and then allow it to settle down for 30 minutes. Once the time has passed handwash the shirt as you would normally do. However, make sure to rub the collar together against itself. This will create the friction needed to remove the stains.
For Stickier Stains
One of the smart approaches to removing the sticky stains from collars (stains that do not go away after using the above-mentioned procedure) is to apply some shampoo. Since shampoo is specifically designed to get the grease out of hair it can efficiently remove the collar stains. So, put some drops of shampoo on an old toothbrush and dab it on the affected area. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then wash it with Safed powder detergent, following the earlier mentioned method.
Cleaning with Natural Ingredients
If you want a natural process for cleaning the collar stains, then you need to look further than your kitchen. If you want to remove the stains for dark colored shirts then create a paste out of lemon juice and baking powder. Apply this over the affected area and follow the same cleaning methodology using Safed as mentioned above. However, if the shirt in question is white then you might also try vinegar for the purpose.
One last thing before we leave: removing collar stains from white shirts is easier than colored shirts. You can even use bleach on white shirts. So, we would advise you to do a spot check first before applying any cleaner on the shirt (unless you are using Safed detergent). This will save your shirt from being ruined.
